I have two questions, first what’s the best job to have in Vegas? Second, my wife, son and I live in Michigan right now and I really want to get a job as a valet in Las Vegas-what would be my best shot at getting one? (I have 6 years experience)

The best job in Vegas is owning your own casino! :-). Seriously, the “best” job for each person would probably be very different, some people would never want to deal, others never want to work in a restaurant. Also, let’s not forget there is much to Las Vegas beyond the casino resorts. They have the same assortment of jobs that any other major city does. As far as getting a job in a Las Vegas resort, in many cases it’s who you know, though that applies more for casino staff than other service people. Many casinos post job information on their Web sites. I would start there. Also, if you have resorts in mind, you could submit your resume, though most resorts won’t hire you if you don’t ALREADY live in Las Vegas, since I’m sure they’ve been burned in the past by folks whose plans to move fall through.

Las Vegas has several world-class popular nightclubs. By far the hottest clubs are rumjungle at Mandalay Bay, RA at Luxor, Studio 54 at MGM Grand, Baby’s at the Hard Rock, and Drai’s at the Barbary Coast. Practically all Vegas nightclubs attract crowds aged 21-40+ so you’ll see plenty of folks of all ages.

We looked the slots payout chart in the most recent Casino Player magazine that showed how the North Vegas and Boulder Strip casinos have such better payout rates than those on The Strip? This got us wondering about checking out some of these places on our upcoming trip. What’s your opinion of the off-Strip casinos, and which specifically would you recommend (if any)? I noticed that some of them offer shuttles, which should cut down some stress for me in getting from one place to the next.

In Las Vegas, the Strip has the lowest slot payout. Even downtown Las Vegas is a better choice for slot players. Station Casinos owns most of the major properties off the Strip. Sunset Station, the Regent, and the Sam’s Town are all popular choices for off-Strip gaming. As far as I know, Station doesn’t have a tram service anymore but I’m almost certain that Sam’s Town does have a tram to the Stardust.

I’ve heard great things about the Regent!! The only issue is the distance from the Strip. If that doesn’t bother you I think you will find it a first class casino/hotel and be very happy there.

How do I go about obtaining the average weekday room rate which you note on your site. For instance, the Mirage website says its rooms for weekdays in early October are $189/night while you says the avergae weekday room rate at the Mirage is around $105. What can I do to get a better rate than the price posted on the hotel website? Thanks for your help.

The average rates are compiled from the whole year, including Summer periods, where rates are much lower. As you get into October and through February, many conventions go through Las Vegas and jack up room rates. The best way to get a good rate is to check with several different re-sellers (like the one featured on this site) and also the hotels themselves. Other than that, playing in the casino you can earn the casino rate, which is usually 30% – 50% off the rack rate for the room.

This depends on what you expect. If all you are looking for is a place to sleep, the Boardwalk will suffice. Other than that, I’d wager you’ll spend most of your time elsewhere… In a recent poll, the Boardwalk was the most voted hotel to implode in Las Vegas… Eventually there will be a new MGM Mirage resort on that property, but not for awhile… Anyway, it’s got a great location, between Bellagio and Monte Carlo and across from the Aladdin, Paris, and Ballys.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Lady Luck. I’m sure you’ll have a great time. As far as loose slots, in general the Downtown casinos have higher payout percentages on their slots than casinos on the Strip. Finding the best machines is a trial and error and process. Good luck!

Did you read this in the latest Casino Player? No, it’s not true. It’s a misprint. The tram runs from the Monte Carlo to Bellagio.

The Gold Spike is a fine place to stay as long as you recognize it for what it is… A place to sleep… As far as safety downtown, it’s not bad. At night I would recommend staying in well-lit areas when off of Fremont but Fremont Street itself is very safe.

I have been going to Las Vegas for a number of years. I read with interest your response to some questions
about getting a good view, and tipping the check in person. What is a good way to do this? I am embarassed to admit I have never thought this was an option and always taken what they gave me.

Don’t be embarassed! There is no “right” way to do this but I’ll fill you in on the most common procedure… Most folks will put a folded $20 under their credit card with the bill showing. When they hand their card over, they ask if there are any upgrades available. If the clerk sees the $20 and says yes, hand it over. If not, feel free to keep it. The worst thing they can say is no and who knows, you might end up with a great room!

Yes! It’s a lot of fun. It someone was into Star Trek, it would be really cool. The first bit is all Star Trek memorabilia. The rest is a motion ride ala Star Tours at Disneyland. It’s a lot of fun. Coupons for reduced admission tickets can usually be found in the magazines like Showbiz Weekly.

If all of Harrah’s properties claim to use the same Diamond Club card, why can’t you get your cash-back reward at any Harrahs property? If I have $150 cash-back coming at AC I can’t get it at Las Vegas.

I don’t have an answer for this but I find it very interesting since Harrah’s has been making a lot of noise about their customer programs being available at all their locations. I would check with your host and see if they can accomodate you.

Have all the rooms been redone and what area should I ask for to get a

Not all of the rooms at Ballys have been renovated. The scheduled date for completion of the project is October of this year. The south tower was the first to under-go the change. The south tower is further from the Strip so in those rooms you will not be able to see the Bellagio fountain show but some offer stunning views north towards the Venetian, Stardust and Stratosphere.

The key at the Lady Luck is not to end up in a “Garden Room”. There are old-style motel rooms… I’ve heard the suites there described as not fancy but comfortable. I’ve read that they have gotten a bit tighter with their comps but that a $5-$20 player can still get food comps after about an hour of play. Have fun!

If you have comments on the Monte Carlo I invite you to rate it yourself on the page here. The one time I stayed at the resort there were several problems that I’ve mentioned in my comments on their page. That’s my personal experience. Many people like it quite a bit. In my opinion there are far nicer properties that can compete for my money.

My husband and I will be in Las Vegas Sunday, September 2 through Thursday, September 6. We have reservations at the Aladin. Can you make any recommendations so that our stay is enjoyable? We will be celebrating a belated anniversary. We have been there one other time about two years ago and stayed at the Luxor. My husband got a good deal on flight/hotel reservations for the above mentioned dates, but have since read some reviews about the Aladin that are negative. Thanks for your help.

Most of the negative reviews regarding the Aladdin are because of the strange layout of the casino. I have heard that the rooms there are very nice, and being that it’s less than a year old, should be fresh and new. I would definately let them know you are celebrating your anniversary, they may go the extra mile and give you a nicer room at no or little charge. Another large plus for the Aladdin is that if you don’t like the casino or restaurants, you are in very close proximity to Paris, Bellagio, Monte Carlo, and many more casinos. Have fun!

We leave for LasVegas July 23and our staying 5nights at the Imperial Palace. Now we normally stay at Harrahs but we got an excellant deal at the IP. My question is should we try the money trick for an up-grade or would you assume because we"re staying 5 nights they will put us in a decent room with a good view.I heard the first tower is the best, have you heard or know first hand? We realize it’s not Harrahs but any info you could give us would be very helpfull.Thanks,can’t wait to get there!!!!!!!!

I haven’t stayed at the IP personally… I would not assume a good room just because you are staying 5 nights. I would try slipping the check-in clerk a $20 bill. That’s usually a better way to get a view. Yes, the first tower has the best views, no question.

We will be in LV later in July and are investigating renting a car for 1 day for sightseeing. Is Dream Car Rentals a reputable company to do business with? Or can you suggest any other website that would have information to answer our question?

I haven’t dealt with Dream Car Rentals myself but from the name it sounds like they might be one of the rental agencies that specializes in high-end car rentals. I can’t speak to their reliability specifically but I can say that you need to be careful when you rent a car like that. Since the cars are ususally quite expensive, read the contract carefully as you don’t want to be liable for large amounts of money in the event of any damage. I’ve heard that the insurance provided isn’t always adequate.

we are looking to compare the chapels, not necessarily the hotel chapels, and havent found anything that tells us how each of them compare.

I am going to Las Vegas at the end of this month and I was wondering 1)When are the crowds biggest? 2) What are the slow days to visit the thrill rides and roller coasters? 3) How long is the usual wait to ride one of the more popular coasters such as the Cannon Blaster or Manhattan Express?

Summer is actually one of the slowest seasons in Las Vegas. As far as thrill rides and roller coasters, my personal experience has shown that some are practically always busy and some are never that busy. The Manhattan Express is usually fairly busy. I’ve waited anywhere from 5 minutes to 15 minutes to ride. Other coasters like Speed: The Ride I’ve never waited more than just a few minutes to ride.

Las Vegas will be quite busy that week as the town gears up for 200,000 conventioneers for COMDEX ’01. The weather this time of year is very pleasant, though at night it will probably be colder than you would expect. Bring a jacket for sure. As far as getting a nice view, make sure you mention to the check-in clerk that you are on your anniverysary, and maybe slide ’em a tip to improve your view… Have fun!

Okay… Lots of questions. There are several hotels that are kid friendly on the Strip, with Excalibur, Treasure Island, and Circus Circus leading the pack. Of these three, Treasure Island is the nicest and can easily appeal to the kids as well as mom and dad. Virtually every Las Vegas resort requires an active room key to get into the pool area. As far as trips to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, these could be done in one day. Hoover Dam is about 30 miles south of Las Vegas, while Lake Mead is also about 30 miles, to the souytheast. Your hotel should easily be able to provide you with driving directions to both attractions. July is VERY hot in Las Vegas. Last year the temperature was hovering around 100 degrees. It doesn’t get much cooler during the evening because the asphalt soaks up so much of the heat. Expect 75 degrees at the coldest. Have fun!

I am staying at the San Remo in June and I have a standard room reserved. Which part of the hotel offers the best standard rooms? What is the difference between the Siver Tower and the Gold Tower, etc. Also, I will be getting a Money Club Card when I get there, is there a way that I can use it after a day or two to get an upgrade for a better room?

I’ve heard that the Gold Tower offers better Strip views… You could certainly ask for an upgrade to a better room part way through your stay. Once you’ve put in some play time just ask to speak with a casino host.

I haven’t been able to find any info on fireworks for July 4th… As far as club wear, it’s pretty trendy. Ra and Studio 54, along with rumjungle and Baby’s have dress codes, though more for men than woman. Basically anything you would go out dancing in is probably fine. No jeans, etc…

(1).I will arrive at Las Vegas at about 8:00am by air, but the check in time of the Mirage hotel is maybe 3:00pm. I would like to check in earlier to put my baggages and make my baby take a nap. Can the hotel keep my baggages the morning before the check in time?
(2).I’ve heard the stroller is not permitted in hotels, but can I bring folded stroller, which is very small?

Strollers are permitted for guests only at the Mirage and some other hotels like Bellagio. They may ask to see your key… As far as stowing the bags, they will take your bags at the bell desk and hold them for you. As far as your baby taking a nap, I think you’re on your own with that one. They hotel may have day-care services but I’m not sure.

I usually stay on the strip, but I’ve booked myself into the LV Hilton in Aug. Now I’m hearing horror stories about how far away it is from everything. Should I rent a car or buy a guide dog?

If you plan on spending a lot of time on the Strip, renting a car is a good option. Depending on how you feel about walking, it might not even be necessary. I love to walk, especially in Vegas, and while it is a trek to the Strip from the LV Hilton, it is totally doable.

Hi,
On June 6th, we are going to vegas for 3 days. We have narrowed our hotel choices down to the Mirage and Mandalay Bay. We are interested in a nice clean updated room, great pool area. We gamble a little but not a priority. We enjoy hanging around the pool and having a few drinks at a fun bar. What can any one tell us about these places? Which one would you suggest we go to. My wife seems to like the Mandalay Bay and I am leaning towards the Mirage. Please help us decide. It’s our 22nd anniversary and we want it to be special. Thanks!

Both hotels are fabulous… Mandalay Bay’s pool area is better than the one at the Mirage, though the latter is NOTHING to scoff at. I would argue that the location at the Mirage is better.
Regarding the rooms, the standard Mirage rooms are a tad smaller but I would say “nicer”. They also have “Tower Deluxe” rooms that you can get that are quite nice. The rooms at MB are okay but really nothing special. You can see reviews of both hotels here on the site by selecting them from the pull-down on the home page. Enjoy!!

My husband and I are going to Vegas in June and will be staying at the Monte Carlo. What do you think of this hotel? I have been hearing mixed reviews. We want to upgrade to a suite. What is the best way to do this? Since it is summer and off season, do you think that we can get it for a discounted price?

I have never stayed in a suite at the Monte Carlo but I have stayed in a standard room. Having stayed in most of the hotels on the Strip, I can say that the MC is not the greatest place to stay. While there is nothing terribly wrong with it, I was disappointed that I could hear people through the walls and that the shower didn’t drain properly. Little things like that sort of turned me off. I would think that your chances of getting a suite at a good price are quite good. Go ahead and try the famous “Twenty Dollar Trick” when you check in. Ask if any upgrades are available while sliding a twenty to the clerk. They may go for it and they may not. If you are not comfortable doing this but still want a suite, call the hotel and ask about changing your reservation.

It’s all relative. The rooms at the Imperial Palace do not compare to rooms at the Mirage, Bellagio, or other nicer hotels. The rooms at the IP are not that bad. The hotel does not seem dirty inside, though you may feel like you are farther North on the Strip than its center Strip location. If you are used to the Four Seasons or looking for a treat, it isn’t the best choice. If you are looking for a bargain, you won’t be disappointed.

You can leave your bags at the bell desk and pick them up on the way out. The last time I was at the Sahara I did see shuttle signs but you’d have to ask the hotel about times and pickup locations.

What does it take to get rated? I am often betting $100+ per roll in craps (pass, odds, 3 comes and hardways) and I never get comped or asked to be rated. I once gambled straight through the night at the same table at Mandalay (we’re talking 8 hours of play, at least) and did not get at thing. Bellagio I have a rate card but I can’t even get the casino rate for the room. What gives?

You should be getting rated for your level of play… How much do you usually buy in for? What kind of bets are you making? Line + odds? Some casinos still don’t count the odds as part of your bet because they pay at true oddds and there is no casino vig on them. Still, you should be able to get rated. With that kind of play I would ask for a host and ask them what gives. Most Strip casinos want $25/hand for 4 hours to get rated. It sounds like you are way above this. Something is wrong with this picture. I would ask the casino host and demand the comps you deserve!

Going to Harrah’s LV for the first time & I’m a quarter & dollar vp player. Is there any particular area of the casino that has good vp? Also, when the eyes get blurred & mistakes become common, I switch to slots & am wondering if there is any house favorites. Is it true that Harrah’s got rid of their signature slots with the little genie on the magic flying carpet?

These are tough questions… The casinos move stuff around quite frequently so it’s hard to give accurate information. Your best bet is probably asking a change person or bartender where the hot areas have been lately. They’ll usually give you some pointers!

There are bus trips to the Grand Canyon, as well as trips on small planes. I’ve not taken any of these myself so I’m not sure which is best. As far as shows, Danny Gans and Sigfriend and Roy, both at the Mirage are kid friendly, as are Mystere at Treasure Island and O at Bellagio. Blue Man Group at Luxor are A LOT OF FUN. I would recommend trying the “upgrade trick” when you check in. Sometimes it works wonders!

Being a non smoker, the smoke tends to irritate my eyes greatly. Is there any casino that is better than others for being less smokey, or better yet, any smoke free ones?? I believe we are becoming the majority, and they have to deal with us sooner or later!!

Most of the newer casinos have such advanced ventilation systems that you don’t even notice it. Additionally, casinos with high ceilings like the new Aladdin would disperse the smoke even more.

Was wondering why there is no email address for Bally’s. Also are there coffee pots in the rooms at Bally’s?

Where were you looking for an email address? They may not communicate with their customers via email. They do have a Web site at Ballyslv.com. I’ve stayed there a few times and I don’t remember there being coffee pots in the rooms…

Not sure exactly what kind of info you want. Since you’re here at RateVegas, I’m sure you’ve looked at our stockpile of pictures, movies, facts and ratings. Other great Vegas sites include Vegas.com and Sonya’s Travel2Vegas. Also, many hotels have their own Web sites describing the property. I have links to many of those from the hotel ratings pages here at RateVegas.

we are planning an early june trip to vegas what is the weather like. are there any hotel specials in june? this will be our first visit

The weather in June will most likely be pretty warm, between 85 and 100 degrees during the day and still up in the 70s at night. The summer is usually considered a “slow” period in Las Vegas so you should be able to find a good deal. You can check rates right here on the site by pushing the “Book Online!” button. Also, if you have an idea of where you want to stay you can check with the hotel directly.

Are there “up-grade” rooms available at the Tropicana -Paridise Tower? We’re staying there at the end of March for convenience, because that’s where the convention is. However, I’d really like a fairly nice room and bathroom and other reviews suggest the

Looks like your question got cut off… Anyway, I haven’t stayed at the Trop but a little research reveals that there are indeed upgraded rooms you could try for when you check in. It is an older property so don’t expect something like the Bellagio or Venetian but it’s still quite nice.
