Palazzo Construction Detailed

Posted by Hunter

An interesting article in the LVBP goes over the Palazzo project - I didn't realize it was the largest steel project in North America - and it explains doing the framing that way vs. the more typical cement pours you see all over town.

Not so sure about that comment about LVS' 'typical attention to detail' though.

The puff piece to end all puff pieces.

"Palazzo features Las Vegas Sands' trademark attention to detail with over 70 different types of finishes."

Nice way to spin the truth. Does anyone remember Montreux and how they boasted that they'd cut costs by using *only* 80 different finishes? At least they were honest.

" 'It will be taller than the Wynn Resort with a sleeker profile that will change the Las Vegas skyline.' "

In the age of CityCenter, Cosmo, and Echelon's beautiful architecture, this thing's about as sleek as Monte Carlo. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this'll be the last of the "Y-shaped" towers to be built in Vegas, right? Thank goodness.

"Trademark attention to detail..."

That's hilarious. For attention to detail, I would direct the writer to the hotel just across Sands Ave. I love reading articles like this one though, that throw out numbers like 70,000 tons of steel, and $2 million a day to build. I find those numbers simply incredible. Also, the fact that they had to go way offsite to find some real estate for staging. For those who don't live here, Blue Diamond at the railroad tracks is pretty far from the Palazzo. Not only that, those truckers had to fight through two master planned communities worth of traffic every day.

Yeah, the 'Y' design is out of favor now but I'm sure it will be back - it's a pretty efficient way to divvy up space and with land prices only going in one direction...

70 different types of finishes? Styrofoam, plastic, rubber bands, chewing gum...

Y-Shapes, Palazzo Night Lighting, etc.

I have no problem with Y shaped towers but Palazzo has a few elements that strike me as cost cutting, particularly the lack of windows on the corners of the wings. You mean to tell me they didn't want to sell panorama rooms at inflated prices?!

Anyway, the tower has some exterior lighting working now. I went by tonight and the red lights on the roof were on, and about a third of the tower exterior. from what was on, I have to say it's a much more striking building at night than day. It has that kind of, I don't know, Batman's Gotham City thing going on. But that's just what I think from a view from the freeway on this very dust-filled (thanks, wind storm) evening. Everything isn't all lit up yet.

In sorta related news, Palazzo is down to one construction tower now, while Trump is down to none. Although the north side of Trump has it's lettering up, the northern-facing gold window facade looks like discoloration hell from all the places where cranes were attached onto the building for so long. I'm guessing they'll be able to fix that to some extent.
