I'm just convinced that the guest you have booked for VIMFP is Sam Nazarian? Talk about spirited give and take!
Regarding the late Mr. Thompson: he wrote the single sentence I remember more than any I have ever read- "Dogs fucked the Pope, no fault of mine." From the moment I read it in 1982, I realized Las Vegas was the coolest place on Earth and I should devote my adult life to the love thereof. Unfortunately, a two decade detour into the Southern Baptist cult happened shortly thereafter. Thankfully I was freed in 2002 and have never looked back.
Thank you Vegas Gang, for all that you do.

My VIMFP guess is the gee, golly, gregarious proprietor of the Golden Gate & thus the gang delivers and debates, the desert rock - Derek Stevens.

Downtown is holding its own on the late night dining front. Off hand, I can think of Cal, Dupars, Binions, Gold Spike, and ElCo for 24/7 diner food.

Dr. Dave had a great point about the possible negligible cost to keep a cafe open 24/7. Perhaps besides the push to get people in the gastropubs, this is a ploy to force more people into ridiculously priced room service late at night.

The local casinos all do a killer job of 24/7 cafe dining. But that's obviously of little help to a visitor.

Personally, I have boycotted Sands properties since I learned how virulently anti-gay the company is (no domestic partner benefits, won't perform union ceremonies in their chapels, etc.). I have made a point to tell my LGBT-rights supporting friends about Sands and I know for a fact at least a half-dozen of them have specifically refused to patronize LVS properties. I know two (small) tech companies who have taken LVS out of their approved hotels when sending employees to conferences in Vegas. Finally, now that Adelson has become such an open supporter of Newt Gingrich and GOP causes, I always point out that giving business to LVS means more money supporting those policies... and that news never fails to generate discussion among my Facebook friends, usually ending in people swearing off patronizing them. So maybe that's a drop in the bucket, but for those who are Vegas savvy and have progressive leanings, it does have an impact -- especially in this atmosphere.

Funny how people wind up aligned behind different causes of the same end effect: I refuse to spend money at Venetian/Palazzo because of how LVS did not pay construction subcontractors when Venetian was built around 2000. An action that prompted changes in Nevada state law to prevent it from happening in the future.
Although I admit I took my wife to see Jersey Boys in 2009, that is the end of my LVS spending.
I think of those subs stiffed in 2000 when "Sheldo" says he will spend $100 million to elect a republican as President.
