Hi again Hunter. We’ve booked 2 connecting rooms at the Aladdin in April with our 3 children. Suddenly Expedia have started to list one of the policies of the Aladdin as “No children allowed”. I’ve tried to email the Aladdin but they don’t reply. Could you shed some light on this please. Are kids allowed? Thanks again.

Children can stay with adults but they can’t check in to the hotel on their own. Rooms must be in the name of someone eighteen or above. I called the hotel to verify.

While some Las Vegas casinos have certain areas that are non smoking, such as table games, slot areas and poker rooms, other than that you’re in smoke city. Fortunately many of the newer hotels have great ventilation systems and you won’t notice the smoke like you will at the older and smaller joints. Zefferino has some great food choices – you’ll be stoked.

Can you tell me approx. how much dinner for 2 would be at Delmonico with and without wine? Do they have lower priced bottles? Also, what is the best/cheapest way to get from the strip to downtown? Wondering how much a cab would be and if there are other options. Thanks a lot!

Thanks! Most Delmonico entrees range from $25 to $40. Appetizers and salads hover between $10 and $20. They have an extensive wine list but I don’t think you’ll find much for less than $40-$50 a bottle. As far as getting downtown, a cab usually costs about $20 and is the most convenient method. You can also hop on CAT (Las Vegas bus), which is very inexpensive. Of course, it can take quite a bit longer and I wouldn’t recommend it late at night.

Hello Hunter
Will be going in May on a Sun-Thurs trip with a large group of guys (around 15) We are all low rollers for the most part but will play poker for 4 hrs / day min. What Casino do you think would cut us a break? Do you think it is worth contacting a Host? Don’t expect the Venetian but the Flamingo, Bally’s would be nice (even the IP if they could swing a good enough deal)

Unfortunately, most hotels give only minimal breaks for poker players, since they barely make any money on poker players. There are sometimes a limit number of casino rate rooms that the poker room has to give out. Do they have any record of your play in the past? If so, call the host and ask – it can’t hurt. If they don’t have a record, it will be really tough as those rooms go very quickly to players they already know. As far as which hotels… the smaller and lower end hotels are more likely to help you out. Basically, I recommend you make some calls and see what the reaction is.

hi hunter. I was wondering where can i find a very good prime rib for a reasonable price on the strip or off the strip, not downtown tho? Dont say Lawry"s cause its very expensive. Nice atmosphere would be nice too. I love Charcoal room, but for some weird reason, they dont make prime rib. Thank you very much. BTW my budget would be 100-120 bucks for three people without drinks. Thank you

I strongly recommend Circus Circus Steakhouse. A great room in a mediocre casino. Very reasonable prices and fantastic service. Really. The restaurant is very good.

A popular place to hear some live music is Bellagio’s Fontana Lounge. There is no cover and besides the live tunes, there is a great view of Bellagio’s fountain show!

hey i just wanted to know if there are any under 21 nightclubs on the strip. do any of the popular nightclubs offer 18 and older entrance (like they get tagged with a bracelet which denotes that they cant buy a drink at the bars) thanks

As far as I know, none of the Strip nightclubs allow visitors under the age of 21. The nightclubs are extremely full in most Strip casinos and they don’t want the hassle of dealing with underage customers. If you are under 21 and have no means of getting into the nightclubs, I think you’re out of luck.

Hi Hunter, I’ve enjoyed reading all your past posts. We will be in Vegas on 1-10-2005 for 3 nights, staying at Harrah’s. My question is about Clint Holmes, is he worth a ticket? Any specials on discounted tickets that you know about? It’s also our 29th anny and hubby is going to try $20 trick for an upgrade, what do you think? Thank You

Clint Holmes is excellent and certainly worth the cost of the show. There are often coupons available in ’What’s On’ and ‘Showbiz Weekly’, free magazines available on the Strip. As far as the upgrade, give it a try – you never know!

Most hotels have mirrors, some better placed than others. A sampling of hotels with mirrors outside of the bathroom: The Mirage, Treasure Island, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, THEHotel at Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, The Venetian, Caesars Palace (Palace Tower)… There are quite a few more. The mirrors range in size and placement.

Hi Hunter; great site. I’m staying at the Monte Carlo 4 nights in early June through the week (Monday through Thursday nights). I have already booked the Spa Suite. This looks to be a nicely appointed large room with a jacuzzi right by the window. Can you comment on the room? Also, since this is my first trip to Vegas, I’d like to have a nice view of the Strip from this tub by the window. Is this a request that could be easily accommodated? I really don’t want to look at the mountains, beautiful though they may be…Also, I heard someone make a reference to something called a “diamond suite” at the Monte Carlo, but there’s no mention of such a suite on their website. Heard of it?

Yes, those rooms should do nicely, especially as a way to treat yourself on your first trip. It is a lot of fun to relax in the jacuzzi after a long day walking around town. They can certainly accommodate your request – the key is the availability of rooms. The Monte Carlo is positioned so you have Strip views from almost all of the wings… Even if you don’t get the view you want on the first night, call back down the next day and asked to be moved. They should be able to take care of you, especially mid-week. Many Las Vegas hotels don’t show all of their rooms on their Web sites. In many cases, certain suites are only available through the casino and thus they don’t try to sell them to normal customers… That said, you still could end up in one of those through an upgrade or heavy casino play.

Great site! I will be there in a few weeks with my new girlfriend. Which Cirque du Soleil do you recommend: O (Bellagio), Mysterie (TI), or KA (new show that just opened at MGM Grand). She is a Cirque (& Vegas) newbie, but I’ve seen two of their touring shows back here in Atlanta. Also, do any of these Cirque shows ever list cheap tickets on the show date with the 1/2 price ticket place at the Showcase Mall (M&M World) near the big Coke bottle on the Strip?

I haven’t yet seen Ka, but I’ve heard it is fantastic. Between O and Mystere, both are great but I recommend Mystere for first time Cirque viewers. Cirque shows don’t sell cheap seats, they are always full price… And the shows almost always sell out so if you want tickets, get them now.

Dear Hunter,
It would of interest to overseas visitors to Vegas to know which CasinoÂs operate a policy of assisting them with obtaining ITIN numbers in the event that they are fortunate enough to win a jackpot. From my personal experience I know that the Monte Carlo will help but that the Luxor will not. This is odd given that they are both part of the same group of companies.
The background to this question is that a casino will withhold 30% of any jackpot to cover US taxes.
My understanding is that UK citizens who do not otherwise pay US taxes are exempt from paying US taxes on jackpot winnings. However the casino will still withhold 30% of the jackpot. However a UK citizen can obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) which can be used by the casino in completing the paperwork associated with payment of a Jackpot to ensure that a UK citizen is paid in full without deduction for tax.

Most Strip casinos will help you if you ask the right person… It seems this policy hasn’t been articulated to all employees. I asked MGM MIRAGE about this specifically and they confirmed that they would assist customers in obtaining them, stating they can apply directly via the IRS.

Lawry’s speciality is prime rib and they have some great cuts. For consistent prime rib, they won’t let you down. Other good choices for prime rib are Delmonico, Nine and Prime, but they are not always serving it. Another non-hotel restaurant that has great cuts is Del Frisco’s on Paradise. There are a lot of choices for prime rib in Vegas – try them all!

Hi Hunter. I have read through hundreds of your Q & A’s and have a pretty idea of what to expect the next time I go to Vegas. We have a trip scheduled mid-December, which I heard is the slowest time of the year (and the rates to prove it). My question is regarding the $20 trick…does it work to upgrade from a regular room to a tower deluxe or suite the Mirage? I know your standard line is that it doesn’t hurt to try. However, I want to know if you or anyone has reported it working at the Mirage? I have my doubts as I have had very bad luck at the MGM…they didn’t have my reserved room (king nonsmoking grand tower room) so they DOWNGRADED me to a double emerald tower room at a $10 discount. I had to kick and scream for hours before the manager found me a room in the grand tower and they did not offer any compensation or upgrades for my trouble. Since they are owned by the same parent company, am I correct to expect the same kind of policies?

Yes, it sometimes does work to upgrade to a Tower Deluxe room at The Mirage with the $20 trick. I doubt seriously you would make it to a suite though. While your experience at MGM sounds bad and they are owned by the same company, I think you will find worlds of difference in how they are run… Fortunately, The Mirage doesn’t have a ‘bad tower’ like MGM does…

Hunter, few extra questions, do you think the Boardwalk is planning on coming down anytime soon? If so, what may go in its place? Also- do you think that all these condos, etc going up on the strip is going to take a lot of the tourisim away, especailly having all these condos instead of hotel rooms, attractions, etc? Thanks

The Boardwalk will come down to make room for MGM Mirage’s Project City Center. Since it is profitable and final designs for the site are at least 18-24 months away, I would expect it to remain until they get much closer to construction. As far as the condos, they are primarily aimed at two types of buyers: young professionals and vacation home owners. Both of those groups participate in many of the same activities as tourists, so you will certainly see more attractions as well as these condos. Also, many of the condos will be rented as hotel rooms when the vacation owners are not using them.

Pictures of the MGM Grand corridor that connects the old Marina Hotel to the New Main Towers would be nice, along with MGM’s Pool area and new construction going on. Las Vegas is changing every day! Our last round of picture updates was a couple of weeks back. Most of the progress on construction projects is hard to track in just weeks of work… We hope to add new photos soon. The end goal of these urban planners is to create a mini-Manhattan, where people can work, live and play in the same space. We’ll see if it works! As far as the Trop, no new news but I fully expect it to be gone in the next five years, and probably a lot sooner.

I was thinking of Top of the world or Eiffel Tower. What would you suggest? I want something fancy, something where you only allow yourself to go once a year. Please suggest some nice restaurants. I think the food is better at the Eiffel Tower vs. Top of the World. I would check the prices though, I am not sure you’d be able to clear three people with tax and tip for $150… Perhaps if you don’t order wine or cocktails. Some other top choices to look at: Delmonico Steakhouse at the Venetian, Circo at Bellagio, or perhaps Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace. Two good options for a great meal at less than insane prices: Hugo’s Cellar at the Four Queens (Downtown) or the steakhouse at Circus Circus (no kidding). Both have great food at reasonable prices. I hope that this helps.

Great site, love the information. I have been to Vegas twice this past year, once staying at Paris, the other at Ceasars. While I thoroughly enjoyed Pais I was extremely disappointed with Ceasars, but everything was comped thanks to some serious gambling buddies. To my question, I’m returning to Vegas next Spring or Fall, haven’t really decided with my wife. We both liked Paris, but want to try something different. We are contemplating Bellagio or the Venetian, standard rooms, nothing extraordinary. I gambled at both properties, but haven’t seen anything otherwise.
Do you have any preference of one over the other? We will relax, spend some time at the pool, gamble at night, and sight see some. I value your opinion as my experiences with your site have been extremely helpful. Thanks.

Yes, I do have a preference. I would choose Bellagio ten times out of ten when up against the Venetian… Bellagio seems to be designed in 360 degrees. By that I mean no detail was left out of its planning or execution, even if it is something that most guests will never see or notice. In contrast, I have not found this to be true at The Venetian. The new Venezia tower is a nice addition but still feels somewhat bolted on to the rest of the resort. Bellagio has friendly casino staff, unlike several experiences I have had at The Venetian. Both have a fantastic array of restaurants. This December, Bellagio opens a new hotel tower and spa. If you’re looking at a trip after April 28, 2005, you will want to consider staying at Wynn Las Vegas – it is designed to top the Bellagio.

My husband, myself and 3 sons have managed to book two connecting rooms at the Aladdin in April. Could you let me know where the Deluxe rooms are in the Aladdin and what view we might expect. Also, would the $20 trick work for an upgrade with two connecting rooms (obviously $20 per room) or would it be too much hassle to relocate us as we have booked connecting rooms? One more thing, do Vegas taxis accommodate 5 people plus the driver, or would we be best to jump in a limo at the airport to the Aladdin? Thanks for all your useful tips.

The Aladdin’s Deluxe Rooms are located on all but the highest floors of the property, so you could basically be anywhere in the hotel. Getting an upgrade on connecting rooms is usually quite a bit tougher, since they have to be able to find two rooms next to each other that are available… Getting connecting rooms can be tough on its own, let alone upgrading them. You might want to stick what what you’ve got… but it never hurts to ask. Taxis in Las Vegas can by law carry 5 passengers… The taxi line can be very long at the airport depending on when you arrive… Usually hiring a limo outside baggage claim is the fastest way to get to your hotel.

I have booked a two bedroom penthouse suite at the mirage in December. I was curious as to how much limo service would be if we wanted to use it for getting around, and is that something that Mirage would provide, or a private company? Also, what is the benefit of a casino host, and do you need to be a high roller to get one ?

The Penthouse should include the ‘Royal Service’, which includes a trip to and from the airport in a Mirage limo. If you want to use a limo at other times during your trip, you could either ask the hotel or hire a private company. The hotel does not usually provide that for free unless your casino play warrants it. A host is the casino employee that evaluates the record of your play and determines what, if any, comps to offer you. They are not just for high rollers. At The Mirage, they won’t track your table game play unless you are betting $25/hand for at least 4 hours a day. Slot play is harder to gauge but they want you on the quarter or dollar machines for several hours per day. If your play falls in this area, you should ask to speak to a host.

I am visiting Vegas with my wife, from Jan. 2 – to Jan. 7. We are freqent visitors, but usually stay at the low-to-mid-priced hotels on the strip (Ballys, Harrah’s, etc. )
This time, four of our five nights are being comped, at Paris and Rio….We don’t mind switching hotels mid-trip….
However, we can’t get the 5th night comped, and I figure I’d like to try and splurge just for one night, at a 5-star hotel! (It’s on our 1-year anniversary…)
I’ve narrowed it down to four choices….Please let help me decide!
On Jan.2, which is a Sunday, I can get:
$139.00 at Bellagio
$169.00 at THEHotel at Mandalay Bay
$129.00 at Caesars (casino rate)
$209.00 Venetian (Venezia tower)
I’m leaning towards Bellagio….
I just want to get the most impressive room, for the money! The most bang for my buck, etc.
Which should I stay at?

It is hard to say if Caesars should be in the list… If the Caesars room is in the Palace Tower, it is a contender. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere. If it is just the impressive room you’re looking for, THEHotel rooms are the most impressive ‘standard’ rooms at the properties you mentioned. I really enjoyed my stay there with a few caveats. Mandalay Bay is located on the far end of the Strip, which I find inconvenient. Also, I find the overall quality of service and the property to be much higher at Bellagio. So, while the standard rooms at Bellagio are not more impressive than THEHotel, I would pick Bellagio for what I consider a better overall experience. If you get a ‘Lake View’ room, you can watch the fountains from there, which can be fun.

Hunter, did they upgrade furnishings in the rooms at TI when they updated the facade of the hotel? Specifically, I’d like to know about the Petite Suites, as the one they show on the website looks kind of tropical and dated. Since they seem to be trying to appeal to a younder crowd now, I was wondering if the rooms have changed much, if at all, before I book the great weekend rate I found. Thanks much!

The hotel was not renovated when they completed the transformation to ‘TI’ last October. The rooms were last renovated a couple of years back and the pictures on the Web site are correct.

Hi Hunter, great site and thanks for your response a couple months back about a 2-BR suite over Christmas. We ended up finding one at the Orleans. Now we have a question about food. We will be a party of 12 (including a toddler) and need to start making reservations for dinners. What are some kid-friendly options that have tasty food but won’t break the bank? Any recommendations for Christmas dinner, since so many restaurants will be closed?

Have you had a hard time finding restaurants for Christmas dinner? Traditionally, many outlets are open and actually feature quite a nice spread, even the buffets. The toddler could make things more difficult to meet the rest of your criteria… When folks ask for good restaurants that are inexpensive, I usually send them to spots like the Circus Steakhouse and Embers at the IP. Other good spots include the Grand Lux Cafe at the Venetian, Caribe Cafe at The Mirage, and any of the top buffets. You’ll want to make reservations where possible, as 12 is a large party.

Hunter, it seems that hotels in Vegas are so very hush-hush with information on new development. For example, I’m interested in learning something about the new suites at Bellagio, and the new towers at the Venetian and Caesars, but the hotel websites offer nothing. What gives? Just like other consumer products, there is competitive advantage in keeping the wraps on new resort product. Bellagio’s new Spa Tower features rooms that are the same as those in the existing tower – they do not look different at all. The Venezia Tower at the Venetian is on their Web site – perhaps you’re referring to the new resort going in next door? We’ll be publishing some info on it soon, based on what we’ve read. Caesars Augustus Tower was featured in the Las Vegas Review Journal in the last week or so. I’ll post a link soon.

Hi Hunter, just got back from our 25th Anniversary trip at the Mirage (I cancelled the night at the Boardwalk after hearing your advice about the distance to walk and we stayed at the Mirage all 4 nights- so glad I did. We had a great time, aside from the lousy weather – cloudy, rainy and temps in the low 60’s (our Grand Canyon Tour was cancelled and it was too cold to use the pool). Oh well, it’s an excuse to go back, right? My question is this – when we landed at the airport around 11pm on Sunday our taxi driver suggested the freeway would be quicker to get to the Mirage and the total came to almost $18. On the way back to the airport at 11:00 am on Thursday our driver went via Las Vegas Blvd and it was just over $10. Did our first driver try to rip us off, or would night time traffic on the strip have made our fare even higher than $17?

The freeway isn’t the route I would use to The Mirage during normal traffic… Sometimes there are good reasons but it sounds like he may have been trying to pad his fare. Some nights the Strip is the worst possible option.

We’re looking for a great buffet in Vegas that has a private room for us to have a dinner reception in, but still with access to the food. We love the Bellagio buffet! Do you know if they or what others have private dining rooms for 50-80 people?

Unfortunately no. It sounds like you might need to have a special, catered event for that large of a party. Bellagio’s catering kitchen offers many of the same dishes.

Your question is a little vague so it is hard to tell what you’re looking for… Expect town to be very full. VERY full. If there are restaurants you want to eat at or shows you want to see, plan those in advance as tickets and reservations will be gone. The Strip is closed to traffic on NYE. Did I mention that it’s very crowded?

….great. Thanks for your help Hunter. Just wanted to ask you one more thing if I could – where would you recommend for good free live entertainment in the evenings? I remember in March watching someone with an amazing voice singing not too far from the main reception in the Mirage…any other decent performances elsewhere that you know of?? The Aladdin has said both their pools will be open for my trip; but with temps only in the 50’s is this war enough to go for a swim in the desert? I know the desert climateis very different to what Im used to!! And im gonna go for the $20 trick when I arrive on Mon 29th Nov(evening) and ask for a Resort Room….fingers crossed!

Ava, the lounge at The Mirage, is located just off the atrium near the lobby. Also, check out live music at Bellagio’s Fontana Bar in the evenings… It might be a little cold for the pool at 50 degrees, but that is up to you!

I’m from London UK, and will be making my 2nd visit to Vegas from 29th Nov – 6th Dec this year. Myself and my partner are staying in the Aladdin. No, you shouldn’t be asked to move. They are just starting to ramp up for the changes there, and the hotel will be open the whole time… You should be fine!

Hi great site Hunter. Well my girlfriend and I will be in Las Vegas from the 21st through the 27th. This will only be our second time going, we are staying at The Mirage and have tickets for the show Mystere. Thanks! Depending on what type of food you are looking for, I would recommend looking at Delmonico (steakhouse at the Venetian), Isla (Mexican at TI), Kokomo’s (steakhouse at The Mirage), and Onda (Italian at The Mirage). The Mirage is a great hotel and Mystere is a truly amazing show. I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

Hi. We’re taking our three sons aged between 15 and 8 with us next April to Vegas. The three hotels we have shortlisted are Aladdin, Mirage and Treasure Island. Do all these hotels have connecting rooms, or would they put a rollaway in for us? Which one would you recommend as the most child friendly (the boys just love pools!)

All three have connecting rooms (specify when you reserve!) and can also offer rollaway beds. Of the three, The Mirage certainly has the best pool and I would say have about the equivalent level of child friendliness.

Hi Hunter, my husband and I will be arriving in Vegas this Sunday night for our 25th anniversary. Because our flight arrives after 10pm, we’re staying at the Boardwalk the first night, then moving to the Mirage for the next 3 nights (didn’t want to spend a bundle on a hotel room we’ll only have for less than 10 hours). In all the photos I’ve seen, it’s hard to tell what the distance between the two hotels is. Do you think we need to get a cab to get to the Mirage or should we just walk with our luggage? How long do you think it will take to walk?

I would recommend getting a cab. The time required to travel by car is not significant but I wouldn’t want to walk it with luggage… The cab ride should be inexpensive (no more than $10) and will ensure you stay on your husband’s good side. :-)

Hi there! My husband and I are slightly confused about transportation to our hotel (Monte Carlo) from the airport. I’ve read that it costs about $3.50 per person for a limo, yet it is about $15 by cab? How can this be? Are you riding with other people in the limo? Also do you know how well the $20 trick works on a Saturday at the Monte Carlo. I’m thinking its a long shot….Thanks!

Las Vegas Limo does offer a per person limo fee that sticks you with whoever else is riding at the time… So, yes, you are correct. As far as the $20 trick, you simply never know. Give it a try!

This question doesn’t have a real answer… The way I see it, there are two ways to play it… One would be to show up early, hoping they have rooms available and they let you upgrade. The other would be to show up late, hoping the regular rooms are gone and that they would put you in a better room. The problem is that either plan can backfire. It really all depends on the capacity of the hotel and who you talk to at the front desk. Make sure you let them know you are on your honeymoon – that will help you get what you want.

Wonderful site… a few easy questions for you… I will be in LV 11/4 & 11/5 and it seems like there must be something going on, as 11/4 is almost completely sold out everywhere…what’s going on?
I’ve already reserved a petite suite at TI these dates, but I realized I could get a deluxe room at Bellagio for about $40 cheaper, which I wouldn’t really want to do unless I had a lake view… has there been a lot of success using the $20 trick to upgrade views at the Bellagio? Is this likely at all, given how busy it’s going to be? Should I just be content that I got the Petite Suite at TI for a decent price, considering the popularity of the weekend? Even with the Lake view, do the amenities of the TI petite suite still make it a better deal?
Oh… one more thing…we have tix for the 7:30 friday show of Zumanity and a 10pm rez at Circo…you think we’ll make it?

Thanks. I’ll start with the last question… Zumanity is about 90 minutes long, so you should be fine with time. There are several large conventions in town during your trip. Altogether, about 150,000 conventioneers, so the rooms are filling up. I wouldn’t expect to get a lake view room at Bellagio with the $20 trick. Bellagio seems to be one of the places where that is least effective. You’ll like your Petite Suite at TI, it is a nice hotel and a nice room. I hope that this helps. Cheers.

Great site with almost TOO much information. :-) I’ll be visiting LV in late October for a “mini honeymoon” trip. Two questions:
1. I was interested in getting information about recommended helicopter tours of the Strip. I’ve found plenty of vendors (e.g. Las Vegas Helicopters, Heli USA, Action Tours, etc.), but very few user reviews. Do you have any information about which service is the most popular?
2. How much luck have you had with the $20 trick at the Mirage (hoping to upgrade from a Tower Suite to a Penthouse Suite). Are any major conventions expected at the end of Oct.?

Thanks. :-). Las Vegas Helicopters often gets high marks, and is right on the Strip thus easy to access. The $20 trick is always a gamble. It depends more on the check in agent than the resort in many cases… I hope that you get lucky! It doesn’t look like any HUGE conventions are running in that time frame, though there is a large one starting the first week of November with about 88,000 attendees.

Luxor, Excalibur, New York New York, and Monte Carlo all feature Jacuzzi Suites that include an in-room Jacuzzi. Many other hotels have Jacuzzi b athtubs in higher end rooms.

Hey Hunter! Wanted to let you know that the new site looks great. I have another question for you… When the MGM/Mirage and Mandalay Corp merger is complete, do you think they will share the same player’s club? Also, I have both the MGM/Mirage and Mandalay Corp’s Visa Cards, but use the MGM/Mirage one more. I was wondering if you think rewards earned on that card will be redeemable at Mandalay properties once the merger is complete. Thanks!

My guess is that at some point in the future, the players clubs would be combined… But look at how long it took for MGM Grand and Mirage Resorts to combine their clubs – multiple years. Integrating the clubs will likely not be as high of a priority as cost cutting moves aimed at reducing duplicate job functions, etc… As far as the credit cards go, I would expect that to be an even lower priority, but a possibility.
