I am considering a trip to Wynn in December, but I am trying to decide if the panoramic view is worth it. They say, it is bigger, but the double bed rooms aren’t. If you could suggest which to choose, I would appreciate it.

If you want to do something interesting, get a room in the South Tower – it is a hotel within the hotel and quite a different experience. Otherwise, the standard ‘Resort Room’ is fine – the panoramic is of dubious value.

Do you have any info. on the merger of Harrahs and Caesars concerning if they will combine any of their slot club accounts in the near future. In the Harrah’s World Mag. it also mentions that the Casino Windsor (Canada) is also one of the properties involved. Is there plans on using 1 slot card for all the properties in U.S. & Canada. Thanks for your help.

Actually, it’s funny you mention this as it sorta dovetails with a new project we’re starting to cook up… It’s Vegas related but a bit too early to get into details. I digress… There is so much to do, I’ll throw in a couple of suggestions: 1. Visit the Fountains of Bellagio at night – the show is fun during the day but nighttime is a different experience. Amazing. This is in the lake in front of Bellagio and it is free. 2. Have a drink at MIX lounge atop THEHotel (Mandalay Bay). You’ll get an unbelievable view of the city. 3. Have dinner at SW Steakhouse or Bartolotta (Wynn). Both restaurants offer excellent high-end dining in an incredible environment. It’s becoming very obvious that Wynn has some of the best restaurants in town, not just for food but for ambiance. 4. Maybe consider a helicopter ride over the Strip. My favorite operator is Maverick which operate out of the airport. Maverick. Tell them RateVegas.com sent you. 5. Have a drink at the Bellagio’s Fontana Lounge – another great view of the fountains (but make sure you don’t skip seeing them from the Strip). 6. Consider a couple’s treatment at Canyon Ranch Spa Club at the Venetian. These can be a lot of fun and very romantic. Have a great time – you’ll be planning your next trip soon (trust me).

Do any of the Bellagio’s suites have an option for 2 queen beds? From the website it appears the suites are King beds only, but often you have more info than the website.

According to my Bellagio contact, the suites are all kings. Many offer a second bedroom option and if you rent a villa, they will arrange the beds anyway you like… My guess is that this isn’t the answer you were looking for.

Hello, we are going to Vegas in Oct. and we heard about the “PERKS” that some hotels offer, one of the perks is at one of the hotels when you register for their free VIP card you have access to a VIP lounge with a “self serve” bar and refreshments.This our first time going and we have a hard time believeing this, THANKS for any info. you have.

If there is one Vegas-ism that I think is overblown it is that the casinos are desperate to hand out comps to anyone who signs up for a card… While they do sometimes give hotel deals to everyone on their mailing list, any comp worth having has to be earned… Most of the hotels do have VIP lounges like you refer to but I don’t know of any that offer access simply by signing up for the slot club (VIP card). The VIP lounge at Wynn Las Vegas has a nice bar and small buffet but to use it you need to be a casino invited guest, status that comes from a [large amount] of casino play. I hope that this helps – maybe you’ve heard of a specific hotel lounge? If so, I’d be interested to hear about it.

We need three rooms for the Thanksgiving (Wed-Fri nights) holiday. Found an ok deal at NYNY (with upgraded room, free spa, free rollercoaster, etc.) on their website. What can we expect at NYNY? We’ve stayed at Paris, Hilton, Flamingo and MGM previously. What’s the best strategy to get the best deal for our dates in Nov.? (Thanks for the great vegas site. Your comment on asking for a “p” room at Paris got us into a great corner, strip view room for no extra cost. Sweet.)

I’m not a huge NYNY fan. I think the exterior is some of the best theming ever but I think the rooms are uninspired and a bit on the small side… If you don’t care about interesting room design or decor, you might not have any problem with the hotel. I’m not a fan of the high ceilings in the casino either… I talk about NYNY in this blog article: Stripping: NYNY. Your best bet for rates is probably to keep checking – they change ALL THE TIME.

Thanks for the quick response with my last question. Are there any good bars or clubs open sunday – wednesday nights? We are just looking for some good times, we don’t necessarily need something ritzy. If we get there early, can we avoid the hefty covers?

You’re welcome! Some clubs are closed Sunday and Monday nights but most are open the rest of the week. Most bars are open seven days. You can certainly find places to go Sunday-Wednesday. As far as avoiding a cover, most do not waive cover fees based on time.

Make sure that you tried calling the hotel – the Web sites often can’t offer certain suite inventory to customers. As far as patios go, that’s about the best you can do. Very few even balconies let alone patios. The MGM’s product is fairly unique in that way.

Hey! I’m headed to vegas at the end of this month with 5 other buddies, 22-25 years old. For 4 of them it is their first time to Vegas. I’m hoping to show them all the neat spots so I just wanted to check a few things with you. We’re booked at THEHotel, and I’m pumped for that because I haven’t heard anthing bad about it. First off, is RumJungle worth visiting? Second, do I need reservations for The Mix Lounge atop of THEhotel, or do we just stand in lineups. Third, What would you consider to be the best restaurant in Mandalay? Fourth, is SW truely the best steakhouse…Bellagio’s looks pretty chic! Finally, what restaurant in Bellagio affords the best view of the fountains—perhaps an outdoor terrace? From the website it sounds like Jasmine is in the prime location, but remember, we are 6 guys….this place sounds like we’ll need to find some elegant ladies to bring! Thanks for your advice.

Wow, lots of questions… THEHotel is a cool place to stay, much nicer than the rest of Mandalay Bay. It’s location is a bit remote but that’s really the only disadvantage. Rumjungle used to be a happening place but it’s popularity as a nightspot has really cooled off. They serve food and the restaurant is popular but you no longer see the crazy lines on most weekend evenings. As far as MIX goes, the lounge usually doesn’t require reservations but if you’re talking Friday or Saturday, I would mention that you want to head up there when you check-in. The clerk may give you line passes. Mandalay has some good food choices. I would SKIP MIX though. I was very underwhelmed by my food. Aureole is probably considered the top restaurant but the environment is pretty fancy. If you’re looking for good food in a more casual setup, try the 3950 steakhouse… SW Steakhouse at Wynn Las Vegas is fantastic. Prime at Bellagio is good but in my opinion, the view is better than the food. In my mind, the only contender for top steakhouse besides SW is Delmonico at the Venetian. No view but the food is drop dead amazing plus the service is top notch. Everyone I’ve taken there has agreed and I have some food-snob friends. Jasmine does have a good view of the fountains but the restaurant environment is pretty subdued and people don’t really get up and watch them when they go off. They sit in their seats and politely chomp on their food. Prime, Picasso, Circo and Le Cirque all have great views. Olives has some good outdoor seating despite being off center a bit. Circo has some great Italian food if that’s what you’re looking for. If the view is the most important thing, eat somewhere cool like FIX and then have drinks at the Fontana Lounge on the patio. Have fun – sounds like a good trip.

I am going to be in Vegas in September for a combined 40/50th birthday party. Will be part of a group of ut 20 people. Some of us will be staying at the Mirage and the rest at Bellagio. We will have one 9 month old with us as well. Do you have any suggestions for a good place for the “bitrthday dinner”? We are really at a loss for a restaurant that would accomadate so many, be fun and not outrageously expensive. Thanks, Andrea

The reason you’ve been having trouble is that there aren’t too many places that fit that description. At The Mirage, you might be able to commandeer a whole side of the Brazilian restaurant, Samba, which is reasonably priced. Three restaurants at The Mirage are currently closed for renovation. At Bellagio, you might consider Sensi. It is a new restaurant in the Spa Tower and the prices are reasonable, especially compared to other Bellagio options. FIX at Bellagio is another choice but it is open to the casino and can be quite loud… You could also take a look at a couple of options at Caesars: Mesa Grill or Joe’s Stone Crab. Both are excellent choices and have a wide range of menu options that should cover the bases. Lastly, there is the Grand Lux Cafe at The Venetian. It is a bit lower end than the other suggestions and they don’t usually take reservations but it could easily accommodate a group that size. The most important thing is to make sure you have a reservation…

I used to collect $1 gaming tokens as souvenirs from each casino. I noticed on my recent trip that these are no longer available as the $1 slots now use paper receipts. Do any casinos still have $1 gaming tokens? The fun is gone if I am forced to buy the tokens from coin dealers.

Most are gone and the pace is accelerating. Wynn Las Vegas opened without any slots that spit out dollars. Most major Strip properties have converted or are in the process of converting to TITO (Ticket In-Ticket Out) slots. Some notable partial exceptions are Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur (though they are being upgraded soon)… Downtown will be slow to adopt so you can head down there… Also, they sometimes will sell you tokens that they use in table games like blackjack and Let It Ride.

While atop the Stratosphere, at night, I viewed a hotel on the Strip that is lit emerald green. I thought this was the MGM Grand lit in green, but I notice that this tower is located near the Imperial Palace and Flamingo Hilton. Could it be Harrah’s? Does Harrah’s use emerald-green lighting? This is driving me nuts!

The MGM Grand is the largest green monster on the Strip. I have seen Harrah’s use some green lighting in the past, yes. Hard to say exactly without a picture. This one doesn’t really help much.

I am really being indecisive about where I should stay on my next trip to Vegas. I have spoiled myself by staying at the Bellagio for the past 5 visits and it’s time to try something new. I am also used to my rooms being comp’ed at the Bellagio, so I don’t want to pay an outrageous rate. I love the rooms, pools, and location on the casino at the Bellagio. With that in mind, what would be my best choice for my next stay. The Venezia Tower, The Augustus Tower, or TheHotel?? Help!?!

Hard to say about the Augustus Tower since it isn’t open yet. The pictures make it look like it will be like the Palace Tower, perhaps slightly nicer. Caesars is a huge property and can sometimes be a bit of a pain to navigate… THEHotel is a great choice if you don’t mind the location… It is way down on that end of the Strip. The rooms are great though – it really does feel like an entirely different hotel plus you get access to the pool at Mandalay Bay. As far as the Venetian goes, don’t bother unless you are in the Venezia Tower. Even then, I would pick THEHotel and Caesars over the V. Have you considered Wynn Las Vegas? If you like Bellagio then this is probably the closest to that experience.

To follow-up on my March Madness question, I have heard that the NCAA is cracking down on Casinos showing the basketball tournament in theaters, etc. Is there any truth to this? Regardless, do you know which Vegas casinos regularly show March Madness in conference rooms, casinos or other places outside of the sportsbook? Thanks.

This mostly seems to happen with the NFL and the Superbowl but other sports seem to be doing some of this. Where you run into trouble is when the hotel uses a ballroom or theater to show the game, almost movie style. There is no issue with watching in the sports book. Many casinos such as Bellagio, The Palms, The Mirage and others host game parties for medium and high rollers in private rooms. Most are invite only unfortunately.

Your best bet is either the Palace Tower or the new Augustus Tower (opens later this month). Those are the best parts of the building, no question. Larger rooms, better everything. Caesars is a large complex but you should be able to find the pool without too much trouble, especially if you are in the Palace Tower. There is a cafe right next to the pool area that offers indoor and outdoor dining. Have fun!

Well, all the good sportsbooks will be packed, so no matter what you’ll be either getting to the ’book early or waiting for seats. The best books are at Bellagio, The Mirage, Caesars, Wynn Las Vegas and the Hilton.

I just read a review from someone who just stayed at Ceasar’s ….he said that the main pool was closed? Do you know anything about this or do you think it was just a problem that was being corrected during his 4 day stay? Another question for you….We go to Vegas every year and usually stay in a higher priced suite….but it seems as if nowadays you get nothing EXTRA for the money. I usually stay at the Mirage and I know you get the limo and the line passes for 3 of the restaurants but that is it. Do you know anyplace that actually gives you a few more PERKS. Also any hints on getting into the more popular night clubs….and if the VIP passes sold on e-bay are usually legitimate?

If you’re planning on buying line-passes, I would skip EBay and try something direct like Vegas.com – they have a reputation to uphold and thus a reason to not screw you over. As far as the suites go, The Mirage is actually one of the only places that does anything extra for suite guests. One other exception is Wynn Las Vegas where you get access to private pools, private check-in and a partially private restaurant… Caesars has been doing some landscaping but they are not closing any of their pools long term. They are aiming to slightly expand the pool area to accommodate more guests.

Anything that can get you out of line is worth it. Those lines are VERY long. The best way to skip the lines is to reserve a table and get bottle service.

Is it necessary to state exactly how many people will be staying in our hotel room, or can we get away with not specifying, in order to avoid the extra person charges? Also, would we each need to show room keys to get into the pool, or is one per group ok? Thanks for your help!

Thanks! The hotels would rather you be up front about the folks in the room but I know many people that don’t for exactly that reason. The pool at The Mirage checks keys by groups of guests but at Mandalay, EACH GUEST must have a room key.

I live in Las Vegas, and work at Circus Circus. Before I moved out here in 02, I visited Circus Circus in 1996. I do in fact remember it looking alot differently than it does now. In fact, I think it looked less tacky. All I remember was the buffet was colored differently and the food was better. When exactly were the renovations?
And MGM may not, in fact, demolish Circus Circus. I’m told by my bosses that a full scale renovation is in discussion. A renovation of the place would mean the entire place would be painted in Circus Pinks and Whites (I believe that it is how it was a few years ago). Great site, thank you for your help.

I don’t think MGM MIRAGE will demolish CC, at least not anytime in the next ten years or so. The place is a very solid cash flow contributor and even though that area is going more up-market, MGM wants a mid-range property to be able to send guests to. The buffet had a $10 million renovation that was completed in 1998. I hope that helps.

We are very laid back 40 yr olds, want to have fun but not into heavy scheduling. And are casual people. What would you recommend as some not to be missed things? Romantic things? thanks so much! Without a doubt make it a point to head to Bellagio to see the fountains. They are great during the day but at night it can be a magical experience. The best viewing area is from the street but afterwards you can head inside and grab a drink at the Fontana Lounge and watch from the balcony as well. If you’re carnivores and looking for a romantic meal, try SW Steakhouse at nearby Wynn Las Vegas (reservations required). Located on the lake, it’s a great place to have a nice meal… If you’re looking for a nice place to grab at drink at The Mirage, consider Ava – a lounge located right in their tropical atrium… If you’re looking for some more specific advice, such as shows or restaurants, feel free to write back with another question.

They are relatively small. What’s interesting about them is their decor – not a standard Las Vegas hotel room layout. I would check the MGM Grand Web site and take a look at the floorplan to see what I mean…

Bally’s would be my first choice here. Their poker room is only so-so but the rest of the hotel is much better than the rest of your options. Barbary Coast is probably next on the list. Beyond that, you start moving down the food chain pretty quickly… Bally’s is very centrally located so you can party at Light (Bellagio), ghostbar (Palms) or even Body English (Hard Rock) without going too far. Out of your options, that’s the best bet.

Included in the package is a “$25 chip.” I’ve never gambled nor been to Vegas, so what’s the best way for me to use this chip? Thanks! We’re having a lot of fun at the blog too. The chip will likely be one that you cannot cash in – you have to play it at a table game such as blackjack, roulette or craps. If your bet WINS, you will be paid in casino chips that you can exchange for cash in the casino. Hope that helps.

Hi Hunter. About the Stratosphere hotel: My parents will be staying here in August due to the rest of the Strip hotels being too expensive during a convention week. They got an “okay” rate, but then we saw some people on TripAdvisor complaining about a $5/day resort fee and a $1/day telephone fee. Are these fees mandatory in addition to the room rate or are they optional if you tell them to take it off? I’ve never heard of that fee in Las Vegas and thought that you’d be the best person to ask. Thanks!

Some Las Vegas hotels have been getting a little stingy and adding these random fees to customer’s bills. The Strat does have a $5/night ‘resort fee’ that is non-optional. My understanding is that the phone fee is actually per call, not per day.

Hi, Very helpfull site!
Staying at Wynn the first week in August and have read numerous comments on Trip Advisor.com that the air conditioning system at Wynn is not up to par. Have read that it is down right hot in the elevators and rooms. Should I consider changing to another hotel?

Enjoy your site, advise helped out on our last trip. Shopping for a suite this winter for our anniversary. Have stayed before in the petite at TI. MB has their honeymoon and exec suites at a great rate, around the same $ as TI. Any recomendations on the suites at MB?

The mid-level suites at TI are about the same quality as those at MB. If you’re looking to try something new, MB could be a good alternative. You might also want to look at THEHotel, the new suite tower attached to MB.

I think this website might become my best friend, you’re very helpful with everyone’s questions, and I really need it!
My fiance and I are getting married in Vegas, next summer. Neither one of us have ever been there, so I’m having a hard time figuring out where to stay. We’re both young, early 20s, and don’t want to stay anywhere too “stuffy”, but since it will be our honeymoon, I do want a pretty nice room. The pool area will be important, because we’re going at the end of June, beginning of July.
We’ve never been, and aren’t renting a car, so I know we should be somewhere on the middle of the Strip. I keep going back and forth between Mirage, and Flamingo. Flamingo seems a lot less expensive, but I’ve heard some scary reviews, and Mirage seems to have a lot of great things said about it. Because it will be in the summer months, is it possible to find a good deal on the Mirage? Any other recommendations besides Mirage and Flamingo? Also, how far in advance should I book a room?

Thanks! Flat out no comparison, The Mirage is the winner here. Your best bet for finding a deal is going to mirage.com and signing up for their ‘Guestbook’. They will from time to time send emails with lower rates… Summer typically has discounted periods and they start sending mailers for Summer in the Spring. I would keep an eye on rates about 6 months out to see how they go – as long as you book directly with the hotel on the Web or phone, you can always have your rates adjusted down if lower prices become available.

Years ago, the Rio’s Masquerade Suites were going for 1/3 of their normal price, and, last year, the MGM Penthouse Suites were even better at $299/nt for a 3000sf, 2 bedroom suite, which ran for a couple months. Have you heard of any good deals this summer? Any particular websites which specialize in suites? I’m looking for the best I can find for $500/night or less. Thanks!!

Thanks! Suite deals seem to pop up randomly… Typically I’ve seen good suite deals at The Mirage and Bellagio during the late Summer and December… Unfortunately I don’t know of any current specials going on suites… If we could get better access to data feeds from the hotels, I would create a dynamic listing but they rarely make their suite pricing info available outside of their own 800 number or Web site.

If you had the option between the Bellagio penthouse suite with full lake view or Ceasar’s petite suite in the Palace Tower top floor….which would you choose and why? One other question…What do you think of the pools at the Bellagio as compared to Ceasars pools?

Thanks for the kind words. Pretty interesting question… Ok, here goes. I would go with Bellagio, hands down. While a bit sparsely decorated, the Penthouse Suites at Bellagio are a very nice room product. At over 1,500 square feet, the suite is fairly large (and you can add a second bedroom if you need to). Located on floors 29 and above, a Penthouse Suite with a full lake view means a fantastic look at the fountains and Paris. Beyond that, Bellagio is a better hotel. The service is a notch above Caesars and that’s before we even mention that Caesars is still a bit of a construction site. Bellagio has one of the best restaurants in the city (Picasso). In terms of general layout and setup, both pool areas are somewhat similar. Both feature large, open pool areas and elaborate landscaping. Both can be quite crowded so get there early unless you want to rent a cabana. Bottom line: Caesars is a nice hotel but Bellagio is arguably the nicest in the city (some folks prefer Wynn).

Is it legal to drink in Vegas, esp. on the strip?
Do hotels and casinos allow one to bring a drink into their establishment?

If you are over 21 you can drink in any Las Vegas bar, club, restaurant or casino. Las Vegas Metro PD will not cite you for drinking on the Strip as long as you are not out of control and causing problem – then they swoop in and take care of you… You can freely transport drinks between casinos, yes.

We will be coming back toVegas next month….we have reserved a Palace Tower Suite at Ceasar’s but were also offered an Augustus Tower room…..my main issue is what my view will be from the room? any suggestions on how to guarantee a bellagio fountain view in the augustus Tower? We also have a Venezia Palazzo concierge suite reserved? Which room would you reccomend overall? We are mostly worried about a great view from our room and the pool area is very important to us because we spend alot of time there. Thanks for your help

It’s hard to compare the Augustus Tower with anything because it is not open yet. The aim is to displace the Palace Tower as their high end offering and it will probably do that. As far as guaranteeing a view, if the hotel will not offer you that then it’s a bit of a crapshoot. The Venezia rooms are very nice and offer a higher level of service than the standard rooms in the Augustus Tower.

Actually, most of the rooms at Bally’s have only so-so views of Bellagio, as all the windows face North-South and Bellagio is to the West. You can see the fountains best from rooms in the South Tower and the elevator lobbys in the North Tower. Bally’s has airport check-in if you want to skip the lines, the downside being less room to negotiate with the clerk as they don’t have the same powers.

Great descriptions of Wynn Las Vegas. I’m going there for the first time this summer. Since you soak up all the details, I just wanted to know how the place “smells.” Last time I was in vegas was in 2003, and Bellagio had this great citrus smell wafting around the casino floor. The venetian had a floral one and mandalay had a coconut one. Monte carlo had a “fresh laundry” smell. What does the wynn smell like?

It smells fantastic. Part of this might just be that it is new but the joint smells like a cross between The Mirage and Bellagio – some very floral smells in the garden areas and generally a clean and inviting smell in other areas.

Hey Hunter, thank you about answering my previous question about Mandalay, The Mirage, Luxor, and NYNY. You said check out suites at THEHotel and the Mirage. For our honeymoon my fiance got free rooms in the Renaissance or the Westin. What would your suggestion be between these 2. (We will be renting a car) Also what would your opinion be between free Westin, free renaissance, and $170 THEHotel. Her vouchers will be good for 1 year for the free stay.

It depends… If the cost of THEHotel won’t put a major dent in your budget, that’s my recommendation. It’s a first class hotel with great service and great rooms. Your stay will be memorable and for a honeymoon it sounds perfect… If the cost would seriously impact your budget, then of the other options I would pick the Westin. It’s relatively recently redone and located just off the Strip. The Renaissance is also fairly new but is primarily a business traveler’s hotel. Located near the convention center, that is who they cater to. Congratulations and have a great time.

Being that Mandalay’s pool area is so large (containing a warm pool, cold pool, lazy river pool, and beach/wave pool), would you happen to know which part of the pool area is the best? Best for me would be shade(since it’ll be 100+ degrees), few kids, and good looking women (hey, I’m single). Thanks, as always.

If you want the best part of the Mandalay pool, spend the $30 and head up to the Moorea Beach Club. It’s a European (read: topless) allowed bathing area just located above the main Mandalay pool area. Since there is a fee, it is usually less crowded than the lower areas.

The Beach is totally safe, totally loud, and very full of folks in the 21-35 age group. It can be fun but it’s very much like going to a frat party as seen in some 80s movie… The female servers wear bikinis and the men are also shirtless… Regarding the Sand Dollar Bar, I’ve not been but it gets rave reviews for blues fans. The location is fine if you are taking a cab. I wouldn’t recommend walking in that area late at night, even though it is fairly close to the Strip.

Hi Hunter. Ridiculously helpful site. I hope you’re getting paid for this. My husband and i are heading out Aug 4-7 for our 5th anniversary and want to stay at MGM. We just signed up for the players club on-line. Do they offer upgrades or anything else if it’s your anniversay (we got married at Bellagio) or will they just laugh in my face if I ask. Also we want to book a nice room like the 1bdrm Hollywood suite which is almost $1000 for the three nights, is there any chance that the $20 or even $50 trick would work to get us an upgrade to say the premiere suite or will they laugh in my face yet again? (my sincere apolgies for another 20buck question) Thanks for your help on this.

Thanks! We do okay but it’s mostly just a very time intensive hobby… They certainly won’t laugh at you but that also doesn’t mean that they will be able to help you out. The golden rule in Las Vegas is that it never hurts to ask. That said, the upgrade you’re gunning for is pretty significant so I wouldn’t set your sights too high. Good luck!

First of All – great site! We are coming into town on the 15th with a group of 4. We are looking for a suggestion on a lounge / club for Sat. night. We want a guaranteed table so realize bottle service is probably the route to go, however, can’t seem to decide. Any suggestions on a lounge or club that is somewhat more low-key (Tabu, Light, others???) with table service that won’t seem wasted at the end of the night? Thanks for your help!

Thanks! Tabu is more of a lounge where Light is a real club… The difference is that the clubs have dancing while the lounges/ultralounges have music but no dance floor. If you want more lounging and conversation, the lounge is the way to go…
