I’m planning on traveling to Vegas for the first time later this summer. I’m trying to decide between the Lady Luck, the Palace Station, and the Plaza as places to stay. The Palace is closer to the strip, but the Plaza has more amenities based on my research. Obviously, I don’t want to rent a car! I don’t mind walking—even in heat, but there are limits. The Lady Luck is less expensive, but further away from the Strip. Basically, I would like to know which hotel you’d recommend based on cleanliness, free transportation (airport/Strip), location to Strip. Also, if you have any additional advice about what to do or see, that would be most helpful.

Based on your criteria, I think recommending Palace Station would be tough… While it is closer to the Strip, it’s across the freeway at Sahara which is not a super great place to cross on foot. Of the two downtown properties you mentioned, I would probably go with the Lady Luck over the Plaza. The latter is often lamented as not being very clean and it really does smell kinda funny… You can take the city CAT bus between Frement St. (downtown) and the Strip very easily. You might also want to consider checking out the Gold Coast. It’s right off the Strip, across from the Palms and Rio. They have free shuttle bus service to their sister property on the Strip, the Barbary Coast. Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Does the $20 ever work at the Bellagio? What is their general attitude towards upgrades? Also, is there any way to get into the Foundation Room at Mandalay Bay, without being or going with a member? One more thing, can you recommend two night-clubs that are good on thurs and fri nights? Thanks and keep up the GREAT work

I’ve never heard of a successful $20 tip upgrade at Bellagio. They’ll offer you a lakeview for $50/night and you can sometimes get Salone Suites for $75/night additional… As far as the Foundation Room… No. I’ve tried. You have to be a member or be an invited guest of one to get in… They don’t relent on this… As far as nightclubs go, you should give the following a try: Rain (Palms), Light (Bellagio), Ra (Luxor), Studio 54 (MGM Grand), and Tabu (MGM Grand). Will be in Las Vegas June 1st thru the 4th, staying at Excalibur first 2 nights then Paris last 2. Traveling with wife, daughter, and grandchild age 7. I can stay at Luxor for the same price as Excalibur. Will be getting 2 rooms each night.Never stayed at either hotel. Which hotel would be the best place to stay with the priorities being:pool, cleanliness,food, and nice bathroom with tubs.

Luxor. No question. The Luxor is a much nicer hotel all around. If you want a tub, make sure you get a room in the towers, not the pyramid. The standard rooms in the pyramid only have stand-up showers… Have fun!

which hotel mirage or mandalay bay. the difference in price is about $25 per day extra for mandaly.

The pool is nicer at Mandalay, but the pool at the Mirage is no slouch and was recently re-done. Mandalay is very far South on the Strip where the Mirage is more centrally located. Both have good food choices. Better non-gambling nightlife at Mandalay Bay. Service better at the Mirage… The Mirage is constructed more solidly. Mandalay Bay opened in 1999 and the Mirage opened in 1989 so there is a 10 year difference… The Mirage has undergone more than one remodel, so that shouldn’t be a huge issue. I hope that this helps you decide.

Terrible’s is a couple of blocks from the Strip, on Paradise Road. The rooms are no frills, but clean. The casino is small but offers some better odds than the mega-resorts on the Strip. Hopping to and from the Strip is no problem in a cab and is walkable if you like to walk…

Having trouble deciding where to stay – narrowed down to treasure island, monte carlo, mirage, and mandalay bay. Ranged from least expensive to most. The pool is very important to us – both the atmosphere as well as availability of chairs.

The rating for pools would go like this: Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Monte Carlo, TI… Mandalay and the Mirage have great pools, Monte Carlo’s is ok and the pool at TI is one of the weakest parts of the resort.

How do you rate the “Gold Coast”? Seriously considering stopping there for two weeks in June. Are the pool and sunbathing area OK or would we be better off at Terribles where we’ve seen the pool area first hand and know that it’s fine? We stayed at “Key Largo” a few years ago and thought the place was a bit ‘rough’ so we’re looking for something with a bit more class this time around (obviously we’re working to a budget). The pool at the Gold Coast doesn’t offer much in the way of ambiance but it does include water… I think the Gold Coast offers a lot of good values on the property, but the pool may not be its strongest point. That said, there isn’t anything really “wrong” with it, just nothing spectacular.

Question:
I used to perform out in Vegas pretty regularly….maybe a couple of times a year, but it’s been a while since I moved out to the East Coast. One of my associates is wanting to find out about getting into a place at the Luxor called RA. I have never been to this club, but he believes the lines are pretty long to get in, even for the guests that are staying there (which he is.) Do you have any recommendations on obtaining entry passes, or when to
arrive in the evening so that one can actually spend some time in this club instead of waiting in line?

Lines at Ra (as well as other clubs) can be very long on weekends. VIP passes are available for all the major clubs… So how do you get them? There are a few ways… First off, you could earn the passes via casino play… Passes are a common comp… Beyond that, I’ve noticed that Vegas.com is now offering a new service where they will sell you VIP passes to Vegas nightclubs. Maybe try that?

The hotel is located just off the Strip on Tropicana Ave, across from the MGM Grand and behind the Tropicana… This means that you will have several large resorts all in your general area… That plus easy access to the Strip means you’ll be just a step away from the action!

If you’re already a Diamond Member of Total Rewards, you may be able to get an upgrade just by asking… I assume you haven’t played at the Rio before? I would call a casino host in advance, just to check in with them. They may just bump you up.

I would certainly list the Canyon Ranch Spa at the Venetian as the top spa on the Strip… It’s a very impressive facility and open to the public. After that, the spas at Bellagio, Mirage and Mandalay Bay are all very nice but only open to hotel guests. The spa at Monte Carlo is open to the public but I don’t personally know what kind of facility it is. I hope that this helps.

As far as I know, all performances of the show are topless. They don’t offer a “family” version of Skintight, so you should be getting what you’re expecting.

I was wondering if you know anything about some of the time share units available in LV. Speifically Fairfield’s Grand Desert, Club de Soliel, or the Polo. The best seats in the theater are always reserved for the casino to give out to their best players… That’s one way to get a great seat, is to be a very solid casino customer (show comps are hard to get). Other than that, tickets for O are available 90 days before the show date to hotel guests. Since it is one of the most popular shows in Vegas, it’s almost always sold out weeks in advance… If you don’t already have tickets, you may have trouble getting them this late in the game… They have a standby line at the theater, but you may wait in the line with only the possibility of actually getting tickets, and they may not be good. Your other option would be scouring EBay to see if someone is selling… MGM Mirage doesn’t allow third parties to sell show tickets, so you probably won’t find them on the Web sites of the Vegas ticket aggregators… Sorry I don’t have a better solution for you.

My wife and I are going to be in vegas Memorial Day weekend. We have never joined a slot club in Vegas. We like to play $5 and $10 blackjack, full pay 25 cent video poker and a little on the slots. Any recommendations for a strip slot club that reward that level of play with room offers, etc. Thanks!

Joining slot clubs, even if you don’t think you’ll be playing a lot, is a great way to get offers in the mail. Based on what you’ve stated, they’re not going to jumping up and down at the Bellagio, but there are certainly casinos that want your business. I would try your hand at the Tropicana, Luxor, Aladdin, Flamingo, Harrahs, Circus Circus, Sahara, Stratosphere, Stardust and Riveria. You’ll certainly get some rewards for your play.

I won’t be able to quote you prices, since that is dependent on the time of year and room availability. Your best bet is to check with each of the hotels that seem interesting to you… Now, the following hotels have true jacuzzis in some rooms: Luxor, Caesars Palace, Ballys, Monte Carlo, MGM Grand, Tropicana, Stratosphere among others. There are other hotels that have oversized/two person bathtubs with jets… These include Bellagio, Mirage, Treasure Island, Aladdin, Mandalay Bay and more… When I think of great jacuzzi suites, two hotels come to mind… One is the Luxor… Their jacuzzi suites are right on the corners of the pyramid and offer a great view. The other is the MGM Grand… Their terrace suites have private outdoor jacuzzis. I hope this helps!

I recently went to Las Vegas on April 15th and stayed through the 18th. I am from the San Francisco Bay Area where it is generally warm year round.
My 2nd day in Vegas I got very sick.
I was nauseated all day and night.
Could I possibly have gotten sick from the water or the weather change?

I’ve actually never heard a story about someone getting sick from the water in Las Vegas… Even the tap water is known to be of above-average quality, for metropolitan tap water… Was is unusually cold when you were there? Without the details of your trip, my best guess would be that something you ate along the way gave you some kind of mild food poisoning… But, it could really be anything… I travel to Las Vegas often from my home in Southern California and I’ve never gotten sick from something I could trace back to environmental… I hope that you are feeling better!

Under 21…I was under 21 my first time to vegas and of course I gambled a little big on the slots. I never won over $20, but would anyone ask me my age? Or just wait till I won big to ask me to leave?

You’re unlikely to get carded sitting at a slot machine unless you make some kind of scene or win a big jackpot. You could easily get carded when you sit down at a table if you look under 21… If you can’t produce ID, you’ll be asked to leave. If you give them a fake, they could call the cops but they would probably just ask you to leave… So, you could probably get away with it but wouldn’t it be awful to win a jackpot and not get to keep it?

October is usually when it starts to get colder in Las Vegas… That said, it is one of my favorite times weather-wise. Bring a jacket just in case, but expect weather in the 80’s F during the day and about 10 degrees cooler at night… Pools should all be open. Have a great time!

I’ve stayed at Ballys several times and usually had a great experience… I’ve had good, clean standard rooms and two different types of suites of varying quality… One in the South Tower was clean and fantastic. The other, in the North Tower, was a bit on the run-down side… They recently re-did all the room furnishings, so most of the rooms should be in good shape… In general, the South Tower is newer and closer to the casino. The North Tower is closer to the pool and is the original structure. Both have similar rooms. Ballys pool is one of the only in Las Vegas with an actual “deep end”. Have fun!

There aren’t that many price comparison shoppers out there for Las Vegas hotels… Part of the problem is that the companies that we use to allow you to rent rooms explicitly forbid us to use their data in a comparison format without special permission… That said, there is a service called TravelAxe at www.travelaxe.com that allows you to look at various hotel rates and compare them. Many LV hotels have jacuzzis in certain rooms. Try the following: Luxor, Monte Carlo, NYNY, MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, and the Aladdin.

Hi, I was wondering which hotels do u think are the least strict about non-guests entering their pools? Or who is least strict in checking keys etc?
2nd Question is, how strict are casinos about under 21 walking into/through casinos? Do they religiously check every person’s id’s? Can you enter the casino with a 21 yr and older person and not play? Also, if they do check the id’s…how rigorous are they in their scanning of them? Okay… I’ll break this into 2 parts… First off, the pools… The easiest to get into are probably the Flamingo, Aladdin, Paris, and several others… These casinos don’t really do much key checking for the pool. Keep in mind that technically, you could probably get arrested for trespassing, but I think the likelihood of that happening is about 0%… As far as getting carded in the casinos, they don’t card people at the door or anything like that. I visited Las Vegas many times before I was 21 and I was never hassled walking through casinos or even watching games. The law states that only individuals over 21 can be in gaming areas but the reality is that it is impossible to regulate that all the time with the volume of visitors that come through. If you look young, you will get carded if you try to play a game or are close enough to the table (i.e. leaning over the game watching a friend, etc…). Otherwise, you won’t get carded walking through a casino… Also, if you keep a low profile, they tend not to press the issue too much. Some casinos rarely card, others card everyone… I’m in my early twenties and rarely get carded at the tables… I’ve seen them ask folks with no ID to leave… Unless you have a great fake, it is probably better to say you have no ID and just walk away. I need some advice. I am able to get the same room rates for Aladdin and the
Orleans. I have never been to The Orleans so I am not sure how their comp
system works and how much of a pain it will be to stay off the strip. Do you
have any experience with the comp systems and how they compair to each other.

Well, most comp systems have some similarities but most are fairly unique. Honestly, your best bet is to call the hotel you are interested in and ask to speak to a host… These hosts will tell you exactly how the comp system works and what kind of play you will need to get the comps that you want… Since comp systems all have unique twists and policies change from time to time, the hosts are the best conduits for this kind of information… Give them a call, identify which type of games you play (slots vs. tables), and they will be able to answer all of your questions, usually very specifically. What is the most expensive hotel suite in Las Vegas?

There are some palacial suites that cannot be rented and are only dispatched through the casino… As far as most expensive rentable suites, the Presedential Suite at the Venetian goes for a cool $10k a night… A villa the Bellagio (with your own pool!) can be had for between $7k and $9k a night… All of the top hotels have lavish suites that come in this $5-10k range… The rooftop suite at the LV Hilton is another one of these.

Well, depending on time of year and time of week, it might be as easy as floating a $20 at checkin and hoping for the best… Other than losing a bunch of money in the casino or paying for the upgrade, that’s about the only way to get it done.

Great site. Myself and my Wife are planning our third trip to Vegas from the UK. We prefer to save money on accommodation so that we can over indulge on nice meals, cocktails and a reasonable flutter on the roulette tables. A nice, clean (hopefully quiet) room with a nice enough pool to spend all day soaking up the sun by it. Strip location is not essential as we’re not averse to taxi or shuttle bus. We’ve stopped at Circus Circus and Key Largo (both were fine and what we expected) the last two times and we’re contemplating Terribles this time around. What have you heard about it and can you suggest any other possibilities? Cheers.

Thank you. While Terrible’s might be an okay location for you on this trip, I would also look at the Palms, the Rio and the Stratosphere. The first two are just off the Strip on Flamingo… All should be able to offer all that you ask. Prices will vary depending on time of year, but sometimes they offer great deals. Have fun!

Well, your question was a little short on details, but I will give this a try… You didn’t mention cost, so I will assume you’re not trying to low-ball on this one. Depending on when you’re planning on going, I would take a good look at the Mirage (Tower Deluxe rooms or a suite), Bellagio (could be pricey but a lot of fun), Treasure Island (usually a good deal on smaller suites and nice guest rooms) and Paris (nice location, rooms are fairly nice). We added the San Remo last week. It is an “Off Strip” hotel… The reason that we didn’t add it from the get-go was that the hotel didn’t respond to our requests for promotional materials, namely photos.

It depends on the time of year, sometimes they switch positions… Generally, the highest is a close race between the Bellagio, Venetian, and sometimes Mandalay Bay. Bellagio is probably the highest most of the time, with the Venetian a close second.

It depends… This stuff changes with all the trends, but I’ll take a stab at it… If you want to convince someone you have money, try the Bellagio or the Venetian. If you are younger and want to be seen as hip, the Hard Rock, Mandalay Bay and possibly the Palms are a good place to be… The interesting thing about Las Vegas is that even though the town revolves around cash, in some ways it is a bit of an equalizer. The guy in flip-flops and a t-shirt with $5 to his name can be playing craps next to a multi-millionaire celebrity… It does happen…

When will the Golden Nugget be changing over the the MGM Players Club system? How many “points” do you need to get casino-rate rooms, and how much of a discount is involved?

The Golden Nugget will be one of the last MGM Mirage casinos to switch to the Players Club program, in the Summer of 2003. A casino rate room is usually significantly under the retail price of the room. It represents a significant savings. For up to date info about what about comps, check with the Players Club directly. Okay, I generally stay at Las Vegas nicer resorts, but I have an opportunity
at the (gasp) Boardwalk to get a upper-floor view room (busy weekend) for $79
or a suite for $129… Do you know much or have you heard much about this
place? I game there often, and partake in a shrimp cocktail there from
time-to-time, but the HOTEL is always an afterthought…But for a busy
weekend, this might (?) be a good deal… any insight?

The place is not in the best shape. If you’re only looking for a place to rest your head, it is okay… Other than that, expect little… It is basically a well worn Holiday Inn. The rooms are not large and haven’t been renovated in quite some time.

Where can I buy front-of-the-line passes for Vegas nightclubs? Are they worth the price? How long can the lines get for the “trendy” nightclubs on the weekends?

The lines can get VERY long on weekends. VERY long. I saw a line for Rain at the Palms that must have been a 1.5 hour wait… Most of the casinos don’t “sell” the passes. You can usually get the passes from a casino floorperson or slot host… Put in some time at the tables/slots and they’ll hook you up… Doesn’t cost them anything to give you that comp. I’ve also seen some for sale on EBay but they could be expired, etc… depending on the particular club.

When it comes to the more popular bars/clubs in Vegas (i.e. ghost bar, rum jungle, etc.) what is the best way to get past the line? I don’t need the VIP treatment once i get in…..just to skip the line. I won’t be a big enough gambler (….but incidentally, what kind of player would you need to be to get this comped?) and I won’t be travelling with a pack of young blondes……so those angles won’t help. I’ve found that most cities have a going “rate” or accepted practice for taking care of this, so I’m sure Vegas does as well. Any insights? Thanks!—-I love the site!

A line pass to the club/bar isn’t usually a tough comp to get. It costs them absolutely nothing to give it to you… The criteria will be different for each place, so ask a casino floorperson. They’ll tell you what kind of play you would need… That said, you could always try going up to the front and palming the guy a twenty (over and above the cover). I’ve seen this tactic work and fail, all depending on who is managing the line.

Most folks that look for good low roller comps head downtown or off the Strip… Your best bets are probably the Lady Luck, Horseshoe, Las Vegas Club, the Palms, and Gold Coast. On the Strip, try Sahara, Stratosphere, Circus Circus and Riviera.

All of them. Or none. Depending on who you ask… While some casinos have different payback percentages on their slots, this is highly subjective… Usually the bigger casinos have worse payback on the slots since they don’t have to work as hard to get players in the door.

I am a wealthy person and I need to impress a lot of very wealthy people by taking them on a trip to Las Vegas. My only problem is that I need to choose the right hotel/casino. I want a hotel with very large suites, lots of luxury, good high rollers rooms, an expensive reputaion, and a very large casino. I am looking for the best and most expensive hotel/casino out there. Please recomend a hotel/casino for me. Thank You

I must admit, this is the first time I’ve gotten this question… I can say without a doubt, head to the Bellagio. You will be able to spend as much money as you want… Between the luxurious suites, the gourmet restaurants, the spectacular show (O), and the great service… You’ll find everything… Besides, everyone that has heard of Las Vegas has heard of the Bellagio. It is synonymous with luxury.

We are visiting vegas from the UK 30th june- 10th July. We have a Mini-suite booked at the flamingo. I was wondering whether you have any comments on the mini-suites as I don’t seem to able to find much information besides an official photo on the flamingo’s website. Thanks

I would bring some pants and a sweater for October, though it is not unreasonable to wear shorts during the day… It can get a little chilly at night, but it’s not that bad… As far as my 3 recommended shows? I would have to say Mystere, Danny Gans, and Blue Man Group… I pick Mystere over O, I think it has a slight edge. Danny is funnier than hell and Blue Man are just really weird in a fun sort of way.

I’m going to Vegas in April and I will have a decent bankroll to gamble with. What game would you suggest for me to play for a single $500.00 gamble? $500.00 bk? roulette? 25.00 slots? 10.00 slots? whats my best play on the $500.00 play for a win.

You want to devote $500 to one game or to one bet? If I was going to make one bet, I would probably spread it out on a craps table, pass line with full odds and at least one come bet with full odds. If not there, I would probably end up at the 21 table… Roulette could be fun but the odds aren’t as great as other games… Still, with such a short run (one bet) you’re not gonna get much statistical probability happening. You’re probably better off making 5 $100 bets…

Depending on if this is during the week or the weekend, that is not a bad price for a two bedroom suite at the Mirage. The hospitality suite is very large… I would suggest keeping your current reservation and doing the following: As your arrival date gets about 4 weeks away, call the Mirage and get a quote on the same suite you already have reserved. If the price is lower, you can ask them to change your existing reservation to the new, lower rate.

This is a really tough question since everyone has their own opinion on what they like, etc… Treasure Island has a nice chapel and they will treat you well. I would start there and see if you like what they provide.
